Collection:
- Collect and label sample according to standard protocols.
- Gently invert tube 5 times immediately after draw. DO NOT SHAKE.
- Allow blood to clot 30 minutes.
- Centrifuge for 10 minutes.
Special Instructions: Minimize sample exposure to direct sunlight.
Transport: Store serum at 2°C to 8°C after collection and ship the same day per packaging instructions provided with the Cleveland HeartLab shipping box.

Use: The direct bilirubin test may be useful for the diagnosis of liver disease. In addition, the test can be used to monitor progression of disease in individuals with established liver disease, to monitor efficacy of therapeutic interventions, and to monitor liver function in individuals with sickle cell disease
Limitations: Ascorbic acid, Intralipid (2000 mg/L) and Rifampicin cause artificially high bilirubin results at the therapeutic drug level. Phylbutazone causes artificially low bilirubin results at the therapeutic drug level. Hemolysis may adversely affect results. Lipemia may cause unreliable results. In very rare cases, gammopathy may case unreliable results.
