Clinical Significance: Measurement of the levels of bilirubin is used in the diagnosis and treatment of liver, hemolytic, hematologic, and metabolic disorders, including hepatitis and gallbladder obstructive disease.
Limitations: Ascorbic acid in 30 mg/dL causes artificially low total bilirubin results. Cyanokit (Hydroxocobalamin) may cause interference with results. In very rare cases gammopathy may cause unreliable results. Results from certain multiple myeloma patient samples may show a positive bias in recovery, but not all patients show the bias.
